What is an axiom?
Ans: An axiom is a statement that is universally accepted as true without proof, e.g., "Things equal to the same thing are equal to one another."
2 Marks
State Euclid's fifth postulate and its equivalent (Playfair's axiom).
Ans: Fifth Postulate: If a transversal falls on two lines making interior angles on one side summing to less than 180°, those two lines meet on that side. Playfair's Axiom (equivalent): Through a point not on a given line, exactly one line parallel to the given line can be drawn.
3 Marks
Explain how non-Euclidean geometry arises from modifying Euclid's 5th postulate.
Ans: In Euclidean geometry, exactly one parallel line exists through a point. In Hyperbolic geometry (Lobachevsky), infinitely many parallel lines exist. In Spherical/Elliptic geometry (Riemann), no parallel lines exist (all lines meet). This shows the 5th postulate is independent of the others and its modification creates consistent but different geometries, all equally valid mathematically.
