Euclid's Definitions, Axioms & Postulates

Euclid defined basic terms: point (no part), line (breadthless length), surface (length and breadth only). Axioms are general truths accepted without proof (e.g., "The whole is greater than the part"). Postulates are specific geometric assumptions (e.g., "A straight line can be drawn from any point to any other point").

Euclid's Five Postulates

Postulate 1: A line can be drawn from one point to another. Postulate 2: A line segment can be extended indefinitely. Postulate 3: A circle can be drawn with any centre and radius. Postulate 4: All right angles are equal. Postulate 5 (Parallel Postulate): If a line intersects two lines making interior angles summing to less than 180°, those two lines meet on that side.

Equivalent Versions of the Parallel Postulate

Playfair's Axiom (equivalent to Postulate 5): Through a given point not on a given line, exactly one line can be drawn parallel to the given line. Non-Euclidean geometries (spherical, hyperbolic) arise by modifying this postulate.
