Introduction to Euclid's Geometry

Definition and Standard Form

A linear equation in two variables is of the form ax + by + c = 0, where a, b, c are real numbers and a, b are not both zero. Examples: 2x + 3y = 6, x − y = 0. It has infinitely many solutions, each representing a point on its graph.

Graph of a Linear Equation

The graph of ax + by + c = 0 is always a straight line. To draw it, find at least two solutions (x, y), plot them, and join. Every point on the line is a solution. Lines parallel to the x-axis: y = k (constant). Lines parallel to y-axis: x = k.

Solutions and Real-life Applications

A linear equation in two variables has infinitely many solutions. Example: x + y = 5 → (0,5), (1,4), (2,3), … are all solutions. Used to model real-world relationships like cost equations, speed-distance, etc.
