Exploring Algebraic Identities

Basic Terms of a Circle

A circle is the locus of all points equidistant from a fixed point (centre). Key terms: radius (r), diameter (d = 2r), chord (line segment joining two points on circle), arc (part of circle), sector (region between two radii), segment (region between chord and arc). Longest chord = diameter.

Theorems on Chords and Angles

Key theorems: (1) Equal chords are equidistant from the centre. (2) The perpendicular from the centre to a chord bisects it. (3) Angle subtended at the centre = twice the angle at any point on the remaining arc. (4) Angles in the same segment are equal. (5) Opposite angles of a cyclic quadrilateral are supplementary.

Cyclic Quadrilaterals

A cyclic quadrilateral has all four vertices on a circle. Theorem: The sum of opposite angles of a cyclic quadrilateral = 180°. Converse: If opposite angles of a quadrilateral are supplementary, it is cyclic. Angles in a semicircle = 90° (angle in a semi-circle is a right angle).
