Natural, Whole, Integer & Rational Numbers

Natural numbers (N): 1, 2, 3, … Whole numbers (W): 0, 1, 2, … Integers (Z): …−2, −1, 0, 1, 2, … Rational numbers (Q): numbers expressible as p/q where p, q are integers and q ≠ 0. Every integer is a rational number.

Irrational Numbers & Real Numbers

Irrational numbers cannot be expressed as p/q; their decimal expansion is non-terminating and non-repeating. Examples: √2, √3, π, e. Real numbers (R) = Rational ∪ Irrational. Every real number has a unique point on the number line.

Representing Real Numbers on Number Line

Any real number can be located on the number line using the process of successive magnification. Irrational numbers like √2 can be represented geometrically using the Pythagorean theorem.

Laws of Exponents for Real Numbers

Key laws: aᵐ × aⁿ = aᵐ⁺ⁿ, aᵐ/aⁿ = aᵐ⁻ⁿ, (aᵐ)ⁿ = aᵐⁿ, (ab)ᵐ = aᵐbᵐ, a⁰ = 1, a⁻ⁿ = 1/aⁿ. These apply to real number bases and rational exponents.

Rationalisation of Surds

To rationalise a denominator like 1/(a+√b), multiply numerator and denominator by the conjugate (a−√b). This eliminates the irrational number from the denominator. Example: 1/(√2+1) × (√2−1)/(√2−1) = √2−1.
