1 Mark
Is √2 rational or irrational? Give reason.
Ans: Irrational. Its decimal expansion is non-terminating and non-repeating (1.41421356…). It cannot be written as p/q where p and q are integers and q ≠ 0.
1 Mark
Find two irrational numbers between 2 and 3.
Ans: √5 ≈ 2.236… and √7 ≈ 2.645… are both irrational and lie between 2 and 3.
2 Marks
Rationalise the denominator: 5/(√3 + √2).
Ans: Multiply by conjugate: 5(√3−√2)/[(√3+√2)(√3−√2)] = 5(√3−√2)/(3−2) = 5(√3−√2). Answer: 5√3 − 5√2.
2 Marks
Simplify: (√5 + √3)²
Ans: (√5 + √3)² = (√5)² + 2(√5)(√3) + (√3)² = 5 + 2√15 + 3 = 8 + 2√15.
3 Marks
Prove that √3 is irrational.
Ans: Assume √3 = p/q (lowest terms, q≠0). Then 3 = p²/q², so p² = 3q². Thus 3 divides p², so 3 divides p. Let p = 3k. Then 9k² = 3q², so q² = 3k², meaning 3 divides q. But then 3 divides both p and q, contradicting that p/q is in lowest terms. Hence √3 is irrational.
3 Marks
Simplify: (2^(1/3) × 3^(1/3)) and express in simplest form.
Ans: (2^(1/3)) × (3^(1/3)) = (2×3)^(1/3) = 6^(1/3) = ∛6. Using laws of exponents: aᵐ × bᵐ = (ab)ᵐ.
