State the angle in a semicircle theorem.
Ans: The angle subtended by a diameter (semicircle) at any point on the remaining arc is always 90°.
2 Marks
Prove that equal chords of a circle are equidistant from the centre.
Ans: Let AB and CD be equal chords. Draw perpendiculars OM and ON from centre O to AB and CD. OM bisects AB → AM = AB/2. ON bisects CD → CN = CD/2. Since AB = CD, AM = CN. In right △OAM and △OCN: OA = OC (radii), AM = CN. By RHS, △OAM ≅ △OCN. Therefore OM = ON. Equal chords are equidistant from the centre.
5 Marks
Prove that opposite angles of a cyclic quadrilateral are supplementary.
Ans: Let ABCD be a cyclic quadrilateral inscribed in a circle with centre O. ∠BOD = 2∠BAD (angle at centre = twice angle at circumference, for arc BCD). Similarly, reflex ∠BOD = 2∠BCD. ∠BOD + reflex ∠BOD = 360°. So 2∠BAD + 2∠BCD = 360°. Therefore ∠BAD + ∠BCD = 180°. Similarly ∠ABC + ∠ADC = 180°. Hence opposite angles are supplementary.
