What are vertically opposite angles?
Ans: When two lines intersect, the pairs of non-adjacent angles formed are called vertically opposite angles. They are always equal.
2 Marks
If two parallel lines are cut by a transversal and one co-interior angle is 65°, find the other.
Ans: Co-interior (same-side interior) angles are supplementary. So the other angle = 180° − 65° = 115°.
3 Marks
Prove that if two lines are parallel, alternate interior angles are equal.
Ans: Let lines AB ∥ CD be cut by transversal PQ at points E and F. ∠AEF + ∠EFC = 180° (co-interior angles, since AB∥CD). Also ∠AEF + ∠AEP = 180° (linear pair). So ∠EFC = ∠AEP. But ∠AEP = ∠BEF (vertically opposite). Therefore ∠BEF = ∠EFC, i.e., alternate interior angles are equal.
5 Marks
In a triangle, if one angle is 90° and another is 40°, find the third. Also prove that the exterior angle equals the sum of the two non-adjacent interior angles.
Ans: Third angle = 180° − 90° − 40° = 50°. Proof of exterior angle theorem: In △ABC, extend BC to D. ∠ABC + ∠BAC + ∠ACB = 180° (angle sum). ∠ACD + ∠ACB = 180° (linear pair). So ∠ACD = ∠ABC + ∠BAC. The exterior angle equals the sum of the two opposite interior angles.
