Basic Concepts of Probability

Probability is a measure of the likelihood of an event occurring. Experiment: an action with observable outcomes. Sample space (S): set of all possible outcomes. Event: a subset of the sample space. P(E) = Number of favourable outcomes / Total number of outcomes. P(E) always lies between 0 and 1.

Empirical Probability

Empirical (experimental) probability is based on actual observations: P(E) = Number of times event occurs / Total number of trials. As the number of trials increases, empirical probability approaches the theoretical probability. Example: if a coin is tossed 100 times and heads appears 45 times, P(H) = 45/100 = 0.45.

Complementary Events

P(E) + P(not E) = 1, where P(not E) = P(E') is the probability of the complement. A certain event has probability 1; an impossible event has probability 0. Example: P(getting a 6 on a die) = 1/6, so P(not getting a 6) = 5/6.
