What is the mode of a data set?
Ans: The mode is the value that appears most frequently in a data set. A data set can have one mode, more than one mode (bimodal/multimodal), or no mode.
2 Marks
Find the mean of: 5, 8, 11, 14, 17, 20.
Ans: Sum = 5+8+11+14+17+20 = 75. Number of values = 6. Mean = 75/6 = 12.5.
3 Marks
Find the median of: 3, 9, 5, 11, 7, 15, 1, 13. Also find mode.
Ans: Arrange in order: 1, 3, 5, 7, 9, 11, 13, 15. n = 8 (even). Median = average of 4th and 5th values = (7+9)/2 = 8. Mode: all values appear once, so there is no mode.
5 Marks
The following marks were scored by 20 students: 45, 62, 37, 81, 55, 72, 48, 65, 90, 38, 74, 52, 68, 43, 77, 58, 83, 47, 61, 70. Prepare a frequency distribution table with class interval 10 and find the mean using class marks.
Ans: Classes: 30-40 (37,38=2), 40-50 (45,48,43,47=4), 50-60 (55,52,58=3), 60-70 (62,65,68,61=4), 70-80 (72,74,77,70=4), 80-90 (81,83=2), 90-100 (90=1). Total=20. Class marks: 35,45,55,65,75,85,95. Σfx = 2×35+4×45+3×55+4×65+4×75+2×85+1×95 = 70+180+165+260+300+170+95 = 1240. Mean = 1240/20 = 62.
