Collection and Presentation of Data

Data can be ungrouped (raw) or grouped (in class intervals). Frequency distribution table organises data. Class interval: each group in grouped data. Class mark = (upper limit + lower limit)/2. Tally marks are used to count frequencies. Data can be presented as bar graphs, histograms, or frequency polygons.

Measures of Central Tendency

Mean (x̄) = Sum of all observations / Number of observations. For grouped data: x̄ = Σfᵢxᵢ/Σfᵢ. Median: the middle value when data is arranged in order; for even n, median = average of two middle values. Mode: the most frequently occurring value. Mean is affected by extreme values; median is not.

Graphical Representation

Bar graph: for discrete/categorical data, bars do not touch. Histogram: for continuous grouped data, bars touch each other. Frequency polygon: made by joining midpoints of tops of bars in a histogram. These graphs give a visual picture of data distribution and make comparison easier.
