1 Mark
State the identity for (a+b)².
Ans: (a+b)²=a²+2ab+b².
2 Marks
Expand (2x−3)².
Ans: Using (a−b)²=a²−2ab+b² with a=2x and b=3: (2x−3)²=4x²−12x+9.
2 Marks
Factorise 9y²−25.
Ans: This is a difference of squares: (3y)²−5²=(3y−5)(3y+5).
3 Marks
Factorise 2x²+7x+3 and verify the result.
Ans: 2x²+7x+3=(2x+1)(x+3). Expanding gives 2x²+6x+x+3=2x²+7x+3, so the factorisation is correct.
3 Marks
Simplify (x²−9)/(x−3), and state the restriction on x.
Ans: Factor the numerator: (x−3)(x+3)/(x−3)=x+3. The original denominator is zero at x=3, so the restriction is x≠3.
5 Marks
If a+b+c=0, prove that a³+b³+c³=3abc.
Ans: Use a³+b³+c³−3abc=(a+b+c)(a²+b²+c²−ab−bc−ca). Since a+b+c=0, the right-hand side is zero. Therefore a³+b³+c³−3abc=0, so a³+b³+c³=3abc.
