1 Mark
State Heron's formula for the area of a triangle.
Ans: Area = √[s(s−a)(s−b)(s−c)], where s = (a+b+c)/2 is the semi-perimeter and a, b, c are the sides of the triangle.
3 Marks
Find the area of a triangle with sides 13 cm, 14 cm, and 15 cm.
Ans: s = (13+14+15)/2 = 21. Area = √[21(21−13)(21−14)(21−15)] = √[21×8×7×6] = √7056 = 84 cm².
5 Marks
A rhombus has perimeter 40 m and one diagonal 12 m. Find its area using Heron's formula.
Ans: Side of rhombus = 40/4 = 10 m. Diagonals of rhombus bisect each other at right angles. Half of known diagonal = 6. Other half = √(10²−6²) = √64 = 8, so other diagonal = 16 m. Each triangle formed by diagonals has sides 10, 10, 12 (top triangle). s = (10+10+12)/2 = 16. Area of triangle = √[16×6×6×4] = √2304 = 48 m². Total area of rhombus = 2 × 48 = 96 m². Or using d₁×d₂/2 = 12×16/2 = 96 m² ✓.
