How many terms of the AP 9, 17, 25… must be taken so that their sum is 636?
Ans: a=9, d=8. Sₙ = n/2[18+(n–1)8] = 636 → n(4n+5) = 636 → 4n²+5n–636=0 → n=12. Take 12 terms.
5 Marks CBSE 2023
The ratio of the sums of m and n terms of an AP is m²:n². Show that the ratio of the mth and nth terms is (2m–1):(2n–1).
Ans: Sₘ/Sₙ = m²/n². [m/2(2a+(m–1)d)] / [n/2(2a+(n–1)d)] = m²/n². Simplifying: [2a+(m–1)d] / [2a+(n–1)d] = m/n. For mth term ratio: put m = 2m–1, n = 2n–1 → ratio = (2m–1):(2n–1). Hence proved.
