Coordinate Geometry

Distance Formula

Distance between two points P(x₁,y₁) and Q(x₂,y₂) = √[(x₂–x₁)² + (y₂–y₁)²]. Used to find lengths of sides, determine if points are collinear, or verify shape of quadrilaterals.

Section Formula

The point dividing the line segment joining P(x₁,y₁) and Q(x₂,y₂) in the ratio m:n internally is: [(mx₂+nx₁)/(m+n), (my₂+ny₁)/(m+n)]. For midpoint: m=n=1 → [(x₁+x₂)/2, (y₁+y₂)/2].

Area of a Triangle

Area of triangle with vertices (x₁,y₁), (x₂,y₂), (x₃,y₃) = ½|x₁(y₂–y₃) + x₂(y₃–y₁) + x₃(y₁–y₂)|. If area = 0, the three points are collinear.

Centroid of a Triangle and Collinearity

The centroid of a triangle with vertices A(x₁,y₁), B(x₂,y₂), C(x₃,y₃) is G = ((x₁+x₂+x₃)/3, (y₁+y₂+y₃)/3). The centroid divides each median in the ratio 2:1 from vertex to midpoint. Three points are collinear if the area of the triangle formed by them is zero. Area formula: ½|x₁(y₂−y₃)+x₂(y₃−y₁)+x₃(y₁−y₂)| = 0. This is an important tool to test collinearity of given points without drawing a graph.
