Some Applications of Trigonometry

Angle of Elevation and Depression

Angle of elevation: the angle formed by the line of sight with the horizontal when looking up at an object. Angle of depression: when looking down at an object. Both are measured from the horizontal. In problems, draw a right triangle, identify the angle, and use appropriate trig ratio.

Solving Height and Distance Problems

Steps: (1) Draw a diagram. (2) Mark the angle of elevation/depression. (3) Identify opposite, adjacent, and hypotenuse. (4) Apply tan θ = height/distance (most common). (5) Solve for unknown. Use tan 30°=1/√3, tan 45°=1, tan 60°=√3 for standard problems.

Heights and Distances

Trigonometry is applied to find heights and distances in real life. Key terms: Angle of Elevation — angle formed between horizontal and the line of sight to an object above; Angle of Depression — angle formed between horizontal and line of sight to an object below. For a tower of height h at distance d: tan(elevation angle) = h/d. Two-observer problems or building-tower problems require forming two equations using two different angles. Always draw a clear figure before solving.
