1 Mark
When does a pair of linear equations have no solution?
Ans: When the lines are parallel (a₁/a₂ = b₁/b₂ ≠ c₁/c₂).
3 Marks
Solve: 2x + 3y = 11 and 2x – 4y = –24 by elimination method.
Ans: Subtracting: 7y = 35 → y = 5. Substituting: 2x + 15 = 11 → x = –2. Solution: x = –2, y = 5.
5 Marks
A fraction becomes 9/11 when 2 is added to both numerator and denominator. It becomes 5/7 when 1 is added. Find the fraction.
Ans: Let fraction = x/y. (x+2)/(y+2) = 9/11 → 11x – 9y = –4. (x+1)/(y+1) = 5/7 → 7x – 5y = –2. Solving: x = 7, y = 9. Fraction = 7/9.
