2 Marks Practice PYQ-style (not an authenticated past-paper question)
A student models a falling paper sheet while ignoring air resistance. Why might this model give a poor prediction, and how could it be improved?
Ans: Air resistance can strongly affect the fall of a light, broad paper sheet, so ignoring it may make the predicted motion inaccurate. The model can be improved by considering air resistance and relevant features such as the sheet’s shape and orientation.
3 Marks Practice PYQ-style (not an authenticated past-paper question)
A student estimates a walking distance as 900 m and assumes an average speed of 1.5 m/s. Calculate the estimated travel time in seconds and minutes. State one limitation of this estimate.
Ans: Time = distance/average speed = 900/1.5 = 600 s. Since 60 s = 1 min, the estimated time is 10 min. The estimate depends on the assumed average speed being realistic; delays or slower walking could increase the actual time.
3 Marks Practice PYQ-style (not an authenticated past-paper question)
A student predicts that equal ice cubes will melt faster in sunlight than in shade. Describe how to make this prediction testable and explain what to do if the results disagree.
Ans: Use ice cubes of similar size and initial temperature in identical containers, placing one in sunlight and one in shade. Measure the time each takes to melt and repeat the comparison. If results disagree with the prediction, check conditions and measurements, consider other influences, and revise the explanation if the evidence requires it.
3 Marks Practice PYQ-style (not an authenticated past-paper question)
How can studying a school garden connect biology, chemistry and earth science? Give one relevant question from each branch.
Ans: Biology can ask how the amount of light affects plant growth. Chemistry can ask which nutrients are present in the soil. Earth science can ask how rainfall and soil characteristics affect water availability. These questions connect because plant growth depends on nutrients and the surrounding environmental conditions.
