What is a scientific model?
Ans: A scientific model is a simplified representation of a real system that retains the details needed to investigate a particular question.
2 Marks
Why should a measurement include a standard unit rather than only a number?
Ans: A number alone does not fully communicate the measured quantity: a length of 5 metres differs greatly from 5 centimetres. Standard units provide a shared reference, allowing people to compare results reliably and reducing confusion or conversion errors.
3 Marks
Distinguish between a scientific law and a scientific theory. Is a theory an untested guess?
Ans: A law describes a regular pattern observed in nature, often using a mathematical relationship. A theory provides an evidence-based explanation of patterns. A scientific theory is not an untested guess: it is supported by careful testing and critical examination, although new evidence may require it to be improved.
3 Marks
A model predicts that a battery-powered toy will travel 12 m in 10 s, but repeated measurements show a shorter distance. What should a student check before rejecting the model?
Ans: The student should check the distance and time measurements for errors. Next, they should examine assumptions, such as whether the toy maintained a steady speed or encountered an uneven surface. If reliable observations still disagree, the model should be revised to include relevant factors, such as slowing as the battery weakens.
2 Marks
Give one situation where estimation is sufficient and one where a precise measurement is necessary. Explain the difference.
Ans: Estimating how many chairs are needed for an informal gathering may be sufficient for planning. Measuring a medicine dose requires precision because an incorrect amount may be harmful. The required accuracy depends on the purpose and consequences of an error.

An online post claims that a household water filter makes any water safe to drink. Explain how scientific thinking can help you assess this claim.
Ans: 1. Clarify what 'safe' means, including which harmful substances or organisms the filter is claimed to remove. 2. Seek reliable measurements of the water before and after filtration rather than relying on popularity or personal stories. 3. Use physics to understand water flow and particle trapping, chemistry to consider dissolved substances, and biology to consider harmful organisms. 4. Check the conditions and limitations of testing, including the filter’s condition and the type of water used. 5. Judge the claim from the evidence. Successful removal of one contaminant does not establish that every possible hazard has been removed.
