State Fleming's Left Hand Rule. What is its application?
Ans: Fleming's Left Hand Rule (for motors): Stretch the forefinger, middle finger, and thumb of the left hand mutually perpendicular. Forefinger points in direction of magnetic field (B). Middle finger points in direction of current (I). Thumb points in direction of force/motion on the conductor (F). This rule helps determine the direction of force on a current-carrying conductor in a magnetic field. Application: Electric motor — a current-carrying coil in a magnetic field experiences force and rotates. The commutator reverses current direction every half rotation to keep the motor spinning continuously. Motors convert electrical energy → mechanical energy.

What is electromagnetic induction? How does an AC generator work?
Ans: Electromagnetic induction (Faraday's Law): When a conductor moves in a magnetic field (or a magnetic field changes near a conductor), an EMF (electromotive force) is induced in the conductor, driving a current. Lenz's Law: The induced current always opposes the change causing it. AC Generator working: A rectangular coil rotates between two poles of a magnet. As the coil rotates, the angle between coil and field changes → changing flux → induced EMF. The induced current alternates direction every half rotation (hence AC). Slip rings and brushes make contact with the external circuit. AC can be stepped up/down by transformers — used for long distance power transmission. In India: AC supply is 220V, 50Hz.

What is a solenoid? What factors affect the strength of its magnetic field?
Ans: A solenoid is a coil of many turns of insulated copper wire wound closely together. When current flows, it produces a strong, uniform magnetic field inside — similar to a bar magnet (one end is N, other is S). The field outside is like a bar magnet. An electromagnet is made by inserting a soft iron core into a solenoid. Factors that increase strength of a solenoid/electromagnet: (1) Increasing number of turns of wire. (2) Increasing current through the wire. (3) Using a soft iron core (higher permeability, field lines concentrate through it). Used in: electric bells, cranes (for lifting iron/steel), MRI machines, doorbells, relays.

What are the three wires in domestic electric supply? What is the purpose of the earth wire?
Ans: Three wires: (1) Live wire (L) — red/brown insulation; at high potential (~220V). (2) Neutral wire (N) — black/blue insulation; at zero potential. (3) Earth wire (E) — green/yellow insulation; connected to a metal plate buried in moist earth. Purpose of earth wire: Provides safety against electric shock. If a live wire accidentally touches the metal body of an appliance, current passes through the earth wire to the ground instead of through the person touching the appliance. Combined with a fuse/MCB in the live wire, this forms a complete safety system for domestic wiring.
