Surface Areas and Volumes

Surface Area of Combinations

When solids are combined (e.g., cone on cylinder), find the total surface area by adding exposed surfaces. TSA of hemisphere = 3πr². TSA of cone = πr(l + r), where l = slant height = √(h² + r²).

Volume of Combined Solids

Volume of combined solid = sum of volumes of individual solids. Volume of cone = (1/3)πr²h; sphere = (4/3)πr³; cylinder = πr²h. When one solid is converted to another, their volumes are equal.

Frustum of a Cone

A frustum is the portion of a cone between two parallel cuts. Volume = (πh/3)(R² + r² + Rr). Curved SA = πl(R + r) where l = √(h² + (R−r)²). Used in buckets, drinking glasses, and lamp shades.

Key Formulas for All Solids

Cube: TSA = 6a², Volume = a³. Cuboid: TSA = 2(lb+bh+hl), Volume = lbh. Cylinder: CSA = 2πrh, TSA = 2πr(r+h), Volume = πr²h. Cone: CSA = πrl, TSA = πr(r+l), Volume = ⅓πr²h, where l = √(r²+h²). Sphere: SA = 4πr², Volume = (4/3)πr³. Hemisphere: CSA = 2πr², TSA = 3πr², Volume = (2/3)πr³. When a solid melts and is recast into another shape, volumes remain equal. Always check units — if r is in cm, volume is in cm³.
