2 Marks Practice PYQ-style (not an authenticated past-paper question)
A puck is already moving on an ideal horizontal surface with no friction. All vertical forces balance. Predict its motion after the initial push ends and name the law used.
Ans: The puck continues in a straight line with the same speed because its net force is zero. This follows from Newton’s first law; ending the push does not itself stop the puck.
3 Marks Practice PYQ-style (not an authenticated past-paper question)
A 600 kg vehicle moves east. Its velocity increases uniformly from 4 m/s to 12 m/s in 4 s, then remains at 12 m/s for another 3 s. Calculate the net force during each interval. Does the second interval prove that no forces act?
Ans: During the first interval, a = (12 − 4)/4 = 2 m/s² east, so F_net = 600 × 2 = 1200 N east. During the second interval, acceleration and net force are zero. This does not mean that no forces act: a driving force may balance resistance, and vertical forces may also balance.
3 Marks Practice PYQ-style (not an authenticated past-paper question)
Two initially stationary toy carts of masses 0.5 kg and 1.5 kg push apart through a compressed spring. At one instant, the spring exerts a horizontal force of 3 N on each cart in opposite directions. Neglect other horizontal forces. Find their accelerations and explain why they differ.
Ans: For the 0.5 kg cart, a = 3/0.5 = 6 m/s². For the 1.5 kg cart, a = 3/1.5 = 2 m/s². Their accelerations are in opposite directions, along their respective net forces. The force magnitudes are equal, but the lighter cart has greater acceleration because acceleration is inversely proportional to mass for a fixed net force.
3 Marks Practice PYQ-style (not an authenticated past-paper question)
A student compares friction by pulling the same wooden block horizontally at constant velocity across two level surfaces using a spring balance. The readings are 2 N and 5 N. What do these readings indicate, and why must the velocity remain constant?
Ans: At constant velocity, acceleration is zero, so the horizontal net force is zero. The spring balance’s pull therefore equals the opposing friction: 2 N on the first surface and 5 N on the second. The second surface produces greater sliding friction for this block. If the block accelerated, the pull would not equal friction, so the reading alone would not measure friction.
